4. Sin
If there was no law against drink driving and someone was pulled over in a car drunk but they had done no other offence, the police must let them go. They cannot be charged for an offence because there is no law in place. However, if the drink driving law is in place, the person can be charged with the offence because the law is already in place.
In the same way, if God’s law did not exist then there would be no penalty for lying, stealing etc. However, because God’s law does exist, if you lie or steal or break any commandment then you break the law. This is what sin is, it is breaking God’s law. Romans 4:15 - 1John 3:4
There is no excuse.
I was talking with a girl from work and I said that I didn’t agree with speeding fines and she said something along the lines of “you know that when you speed that you break the law and you know what the penalty is so you have no excuse”.
I was smiling when I agreed with her. The reason is that yes, I don’t agree with the law, and I also don’t agree with the penalty, but the fact that I don’t agree doesn’t mean that the law doesn’t exist and that if I am caught for speeding, I will be punished according to the law.
Our consciences condemn us.
There are two witnesses that condemn us – God and our conscience. We instinctively know when we have done right or wrong. This is not a learned behaviour – look at little children when they get caught for lying or stealing, they know it is wrong. What God has done, He has written His law on our hearts and our consciences tells us what we have done4.9. On Judgment Day, our conscience will accuse us of what we have done. The conscience is that little voice that speaks to us and when we do something wrong it points it out to us. More often than not we ignore our consciences and try to justify ourselves, however, we still know deep down if we have done wrong. Rom 2:15
What about “good” people?
Most of us think that we are good people. The Bible actually tells us that we think that we are good and pure Proverbs 16:2 - Psalm 14:1-3. However, the Bible also tells us that no one is good4.5-8. The biggest problem is that we use our own standards and not God’s standards to judge levels of goodness. God’s standard of goodness is the 10 commandments3.3. |
