3. Law

The law explains what sin is. Romans 3:20 - Galatians 3:24.

  1. You shall have no other gods before Me
We should not put anything or anybody before God. We should not put any gods before God. This includes our family and friends

  1. You shall not commit idolatry
The Bible talks about people having idols in their hearts Ezekiel 14:3-7. We can make a god in our own image if we believe the real God to have attributes that he does not have. Thus we have created our own god, e.g. if we say that God is good and will not send people to hell, then that is creating a “god” that does not exist, that is a god of our own imagination, because in the Bible it states that the real God will send people to hell.

Also, you don’t have to worship a physical idol, but that other things, even legitimate things, can become idols in your life if they come before God, e.g. if a husband/wife comes before God, job comes before God - if anything at all comes before God it is an idol!!! So, if you have ever put anything before God He sees you as an idolater.

  1. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
In vain does not just mean using God’s name inappropriately or as a swear word, it means to use God’s name without the respect due to it. If you have ever used the name of God or Jesus in any way other than with reverence, respect and awe then you have taken the Lord’s name in vain. His name is so holy that a devout Jew would not even speak His name such was his respect and fear of God.

This may be a difficult concept for many people because most people these days don’t really have a concept of love, fear or respect the way that there used to be. The closest example is our parents. We love our parents, but if we do the wrong thing then we expect to be punished. In the same way, God loves us and we should love, respect and fear Him because He will punish us if we do the wrong thing.

Also, people use God’s name as a swear word. Instead of using a four-letter word to express disgust, they use His holy name. Even Hitler's name isn't despised enough to be used as a curse word.

  1. Honour the Sabbath and keep it holy
God instructed us to set aside one day a week, to worship and honour Him. Have you kept this commandment?

  1. Honour your father and mother
How many of us have actually done this? If you have ever lied to your parents, done things that they instructed you not to do, been disrespectful towards your parents then you have dishonoured your parents.

  1. You shall not kill/murder
The Bible expands on this commandment and says that if you have even hated another person you are a murderer (1 John 3:15) and if we have ever been angry without cause with our brother that we are in danger of judgment(Matthew 5:22). So, we don’t have to physically kill someone to be a murderer, if you even look at someone with hate, God sees you as a murderer.

  1. You shall not commit adultery
Jesus said that if you even look at another person with lust then it is the same a committing adultery(Matthew 5:28). If you have done this, God sees you as an adulterer.

  1. You shall not steal
Stealing is simply taking something that does not belong to us. You could take something that seems insignificant to you - like stealing the bosses time by not working as hard as you could, talking with your work colleagues or talking on the phone during work time, taking a paper clip or pen, photocopying something from work, breaking copyright by copying music, software or DVD’s, stealing money out of your parents purse and so on. However, the value of the article does not matter to God – He sees it all as stealing. So, if you have ever taken anything at all that does not belong to you, God sees you as a thief.

  1. You shall not lie
In all honesty, who of us can say that we have NEVER told a lie? A lie is simply something that is not true. Sometimes people try to gloss over the seriousness of lying by calling them fibs, half-truths, white lies etc. However, no matter how we try to dress it up, if it isn’t the truth, then it is a lie. How many lies do we have to tell to be a liar? Just one. The Bible warns that all liars will have their part in the Lake of Fire and will not go to heaven. You may not think deceitfulness is a serious sin – I certainly didn’t. God does! If you have ever told even one lie, God sees you as a liar.

  1. You shall not covet
That means we shouldn't desire anything that belongs to another person. The Bible states that the covetous will not inherit the Kingdom of God.

The law is used for anyone who has broken God’s commandments(1 Timothy 1:8-10) and stops us from justifying ourselves(Romans 3:19-22) and shows us that no-one can enter God’s kingdom through their own efforts.
